Fuenteovejuna is a small village in Ciudad Real, Spain, where the story happens in 1476.
Fernan Gomez de Guzman is the Commander of Fuenteovejuna.
He abuses his power.
He humiliates people and hurts the women of the village.
The Commander tries to hurt the mayor’s daughter on her wedding day.
The mayor’s daughter is Laurencia and she represents courage and dignity.
Frondoso is Laurencia’s husband and represents bravery.
Esteban is the mayor and stands for justice and loyalty.
Laurencia rebels against the Commander and unites the village to act.
The village decides to unite and fight.
They kill the Commander
The Catholic Kings send a judge to investigate.
The village stays united.
When asked who killed him, they say, “Fuenteovejuna did it.”
The judge cannot find one person to blame.
